If at first you don’t succeed, try 7 more times.
Hi! I’m Jen Morecraft, the owner of Counter Culture Sourdough Co. I have taught over 45 classes this past year and a half, but I wasn’t always a skilled baker! In fact, only a few years ago, I tried to make banana bread and forgot to add the flour! Today, I make 100% of our baked goods at home.
A few years ago, I was surrounded by a community of friends who were very skilled sourdough bakers. I enjoyed their bread so much, I knew I had to learn to make it myself. The problem was, they all seemed too busy to teach me, so I fumbled through the process myself. I tried SEVEN times to get a starter going from scratch, and on the seventh try I succeeded! But then, I thought it a good idea to put my starter in a new jar with an unsealed lid and I killed that one too. So how did I get here? I finally got an established starter from a family member, which was started in 2010-2011. I have been baking ever since! While my results were inconsistent in the beginning, I finally hit my stride and started making bread that I was proud to share with my family and friends.
While I wasn’t anticipating it, people began to associate me with sourdough. I had some friends ask if I would do a class. I finally set my first class up in February of 2025, and to my surprise, it sold out in less than 6 hours! I have gone on to teach over 35 classes this past year, mostly in the Des Moines and surrounding areas. I truly enjoy teaching these classes, and giving people the foundation to start with that I didn’t have. I would love to have you join me in learning how to Bake Better Bread.
